BORN: January 31, 1951, Chiswick, London, England Phil Collins was born January 31st, 1951 in Chiswick, England. He got his first drum, one of those noisy tin ones, at the age of 5. His first proper kit came when he was 12, and whether in front of the mirror or the TV he would be drumming along to any music he could. A natural performer Collins attended stage school, and was soon playing in London's West End as the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver. The cheeky Cockney image from Dickens camenaturally and would stand him in good stead during his future successes. He soon formed a band called The Real Thing and played his first gigs. Before I even began to research the meaning, I had my own story in my mind. Here it goes... "I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am" The narrator has seen the man before, when he caught him sleeping with his wife. Every animal preys on another or even each other. In this case, as he was going through a divorce I believe his natural instincts were kicking in and he was pondering killing his wife. For example let's look at the following line: "I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord" He clearly feels a sudden rush of emotion that has overcome him. Urge to Kill? The natural feeling to take another life. In most cases however, the ego and super-ego talk the mind out of committing the crime because we know it's wrong. The words of the narrator would be in my mouth if i ever find the bastard that shot my father dead.
