George Roger Waters was born on September 6, 1943. He was
born in Great Bookham, in Surrey, which is near a town
called Dorking, about twenty miles south of London. Many of
his songs are about the Second World War, in which his
father, Eric Fletcher Waters (to whom The Final Cut was
dedicated) died during the British invasion of Anzio,
Italy. Waters describes his childhood in this Musician
Magazine, 1992 interview.

Roger Waters started playing on "The Abdabs" (1965). The
Abdabs mostly played rhythm and blues songs. Juliette later
married Wright, and she, Noble, and Metcalf all quit the
band. Waters then brought in Bob Close and Syd Barrett for
guitars, then later Close left, leaving the original
recorded Pink Floyd lineup. In late '65, they became "The

        ------ About artist/band Roger Waters

If you've never seen Roger Water's DVD, "The Wall - Live In Berlin", you should absolutely check it out. It's definitely one of the best concert videos that I've ever seen. The concert took place in 1990, in front of a remnant of the Berlin Wall, with upwards of 300,000 fans in attendance. The guest performers included Bryan Adams, Cyndi Lauper, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, and many others. There"s also an interesting and insightful interview with Roger in the Documentary segment. Roger is truly a musical genius.

More literary genius | Reviewer: soupastahhh
------ About the album Amused to Death performed by Roger Waters

roger always seemed to be a bit of an ass in a lot of the interviews i've seen, but in a not-so-offensive john lennon ass kind of way...
the man is a literary genius lyrically, solid music touching on some familiar patterns here and there... the sound engineering and production are superb... i think amused is not quite there as far as the listening experience as a whole, as much as pros and cons.... i have always been a bit partial to dave really, i like the sound of his voice and his guitar style is more genius than three jimi hendrixes.... with that said, i love all roger's solo stuff. consistently brilliant... i would like to see a bit more of an experience on live tours- of course expecting nothing as big as the pulse machine but a bit more for those "fun guys" in the crowd..... but the music is spot on in every live roger solo show....
keep it flowing roger!!! they're having sex in pennsylvania now, next it will be kansas. dear god. let the windshield evaporate :)

spread the One Love, if you don't need it, pass it along. It has always existed, in constant flux as the life- giving energy fills your heart when you buy a McD's dollar double cheese for the homeless guy on the median at the stoplight. make sure to remind him to pass along the One Love when he can

Under the word meaning in the dictionary must be Roger Waters, Leaving Beirut! | Reviewer: Steve
------ About the song Leaving Beirut performed by Roger Waters

I was on camp and thinking how everyone just wasn't co-operating and I kept thinking of this song on the way back on the bus. I just love protest songs and songs with huge amounts of emotion and meaning and this is one of them and I am not afraid to say this song has me on the verge of tears!

    Mother... | Reviewer: Mark Fields
------ About the song Mother performed by Roger Waters

Probably THE most brilliant lyric Roger ever wrote. The whole concept behind "The Wall". And, yes, I know that the the concept occurred when Roger was pissed off enough to actually spit on a fan through a chain link fence during the "Animals" tour. "The Wall". I wasn't there. I don't know. But what I do know is this. This is the most succint lyric about alienation that has ever been written. Trying to find your Father. "Boy, don't you end up like me." Listen to the album. It all goes back to "Mother". Roger had it right. And every word he ever wrote after that consists of that song. What does it mean to be a man? "Ooo, I need a Dirty Girl." Damn straight.

Perfect Sense Part I | Reviewer: Dennis Oberheu
------ About the song Perfect Sense Part I & II performed by Roger Waters

I'M hearing "Don't make us laugh you're a smart kid time is linear runways are straight" (as in time and space being relative and reality not being the way our ego percieves it to be). Then he is equiped with a nuclear submarine and sent back to look for the garden of eden.(Which he had when he recognized the true meaning of time and space.)

        ------ About artist/band Roger Waters

I never knew the man behind pink floyd,Roger Waters,so he was the one with the special voice ,base, and crazyness, that made Floyd sound the way it does.I am from romania so for us this music was and still is a way escape the comunism trauma. But when i saw "in the flesh" i understood.Roger is the best!

Beautiful Song but Beyond George's Comprehension | Reviewer: rogers#1fan
------ About the song Leaving Beirut performed by Roger Waters

This past year I was what I consider to be one of the luckiest people in the world when I was gifted with the ultimate pleasure experience of seeing Roger Waters perform in Chicago in September and again in Milwaukee in July. This song really says it all, if only poor Dubya understood what Rogers words are saying. Asking a bit much from someone who doesn't even know how to say the words.

To Toby, I don't know how old your post is, I don't know if you still haven't been able to find the song, but if not, I have it.

the animals featured in What God Wants Parts I-III | Reviewer: Mr Otter
------ About the song What God Wants, Part III performed by Roger Waters

The animals chosen in the three parts of this song have significance.

The first 2 are the beetle and the springbok, both prominent in

Egyptian culture, writing and religion. Egyptian culture represents some of the

earliest recorded written records and some of the initial deep and

lasting impressions of religion in recorded history. That is why those

particular animals were chosen as the first to be introduced.

The next animals to appear are the jackass and hyena in tandem with the

alien joker. The braying jackass and (laughing) hyena fit perfectly

here. They are 2 animals associated with laughing-like behavior. It also represents how religion became distanced from its initial

intended purpose (mysticism) and was corrupted into the absurd (eg:

Galileo--finally pardoned in the mid-1970's for the crime of thinking

the Earth is NOT the center of the universe.Truth became secondary

centuries before and by dis-associating itself from truth, religion became,

    in essence, a joke)

In part III, the music becomes more grim and serious and is perfect for

the appearance of the vulture and the magpie. Magpies are associated

with theft and death and of course vultures are known for consuming the

flesh of the dead. Opportunism is also a component in the reputations

of both birds. This is an excellent choice for the animals who 'take

the cash box from its hook', a representation of how religion has

evolved into more of a business than its original purpose, as pointed

out in the first line of part III, "Don't be afraid, it's only

business" as sighed by the alien in a somewhat ironic resigned concession to the truth. Its all about the money at this point. The morphing of

business and religion is illustrated well in the lines "And in banks

across the world Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray"
    Where do they pray? BANKS
Who is praying? the first listed are the most dominant RELIGIOUS

groups with the list disintegrating into "every other race, creed,

colour, tint or hue". In other words-EVERYONE. Still, the initial

distinctions being drawn along religious lines as opposed to skin color,

socio-economic or geographical distinctions is significant.

The raccoon and the groundhog are the handlers of the money. The

raccoon with its mask like a bandit, then the groundhog implying

burying or stashing of the 'loot'.

Finally, the hyena appears. In view of the niche filled by hyenas in the ecosystem combined with the subtleties and nuances associated with them as far as peoples perceptions go, this is an excellent choice to 'break cover and stream through the meadow' as 'the fog rolls in' with the fog symbolic of confusion in the veteran.
I think Roger is the greatest lyric writer of our time and he shows an

uncanny if not disturbingly prophetic (the alien prophet?) grasp of the

world condition, brought into specific focus by the benefit of the passage of time since he wrote his words.

------ About the song Perfect Sense Part I & II performed by Roger Waters

this is from rolling stone,1992! the song is over 15 years old, folks! yes, iraq and mid east part of the equation, but our current situation has zippo to do with the original writings (though you can certainly say it's prophetic). in any case, with PS I&II, waters is more critical of our culture of TV news and the way we watch events unfold than he is of specific mideast tension.
"It was three years before Operation Desert Storm that Waters, the British founder and former chief composer of Pink Floyd, began work on Amused To Death, his third solo album, by writing "Perfect Sense," a two-part song suite envisioning a world in which live television transmissions of war and upheaval become the principal form of mass entertainment. According to the album's thesis, since there is nothing in the history of civilization that generates more profit for the power elite than war, its creators see the enterprise as a can't-miss proposition.

"The idea for the album," says Waters, "was a strangely prophetic one. I was working within the general metaphor of a gorilla watching television, the ape being a symbol for anyone who's been sitting with his mouth open in front of network and cable news for the last 10 years. The record explores the idea of television as medicine: It's either healing us or killing us. The truth is it's doing both, healing us as a target audience but killing off our respective cultures."

------ About the song Perfect Sense Part I & II performed by Roger Waters

    "Can't you see
    It all makes perfect sense
    Expressed in dollars and cents"

If you think in terms of money then all the inhumane things we do infact MAKE SENSE! The monkey loses his mind to money. He discards history and compassion and is caught up in the neverending greed of humanity. People think if they can be faithful to an organized religion but not soak in the scriptures trues meaning than they are cleansed of sin. ( remind you of someone??.. maybe our president!).
I think also the sportscaster representation for war.. is somewhat true for how our media portrays war. Have you seen a commercial for the army lately? what a load of shit!

"And the brokers on Wall Street said
Don't make us laugh, you're a smart kid
    Time is linear
    Memory's a stranger
    History is for fools
Man is a tool in the hands
    Of the great God Almighty
And they gave him command of a nuclear submarine
Sent him back in search of the Garden of Eden"

people with these insane points of view are infact in charge of nuclear submarines!

Cant see the religion reference? | Reviewer: Jody J
------ About the song Perfect Sense Part I & II performed by Roger Waters

The starting audio, with the person saying he can feel his mind going. Its the Monkey, looking at the broken bone he just used to kill, and is aware of it for the first time. Then he turns his back on the garden of Eden(Innocence), but still washes away all the sin(Guilt) in the "Pool of holy writing"(Bible). Its funny how true that is for all those religious people out there.. sin all week, adn clean yourself on Sundays. Then do it again.
