Sad Clown Lyrics
Artist(Band):Jars Of Clay
Say how's the weather, so I look out the window
To brighten my soul, but I can't control the rain
That keeps falling
Smile on the outside that never comes in
A comedy, mystery, irony, tragedy
So I scream "let the show begin"
You break me open, turn on the light
Stumble inside with me, with me
Do I entertain you?
Do I preoccupy you with my wit to cover this lie?
Are you mesmerized?
Do you think me faithful, do you think me a clown?
I picked out this shirt, I put on this hat
I wore all this paint just for you

Review about Sad Clown
Depth... | Reviewer: Q | 10/24/2007Jars of Clay has a wonderful way of making their lyrics deep and though provoking. This song is no exception. The imagery in the lyrics of this song are amazing.
In the first stanza, the lyricist is looking for something other than the life they are living. They are searching for something brighter than their life, but all they find is that they can't control the rain that falls. They are trapped by their lives.
Take the second stanza as though they are speaking directly to God. Do we entertain God? We as Christians often get caught up in the secular culture that has seaped into the church. We strive for all the bells and whistles that mainstream Christianity perscribes to us. Often times this is our wit to cover our lies. We emerse ourselves in it, and loose track of God's will. Often times, we use them to cover up our struggles with our faith.
As Christians, we often times live a lie. We put on a mask, and hide the pain in our lives. Often times, we even try to hide it from God. We put on costumes and masks, trying to make our faith into something it isn't. We do all of these things to try and please God, but often times we aren't following our hearts. We put on costumes, trying to be something we are not.
Does God find this to be faithful, or does he think we are clowns? It is an interesting question. Some would argue that pursuing all the bells and whistles and trying to make our faith as active as possible is admirable. That God would be pleased by our efforts. Others would argue that we are missing the point, and living a shallow faith.
So how do we deal with what traps us? I think every Christian asks that question, most on a daily basis. I find this song to be an excellent illustration of the internal battles that Christians fight because we will always question whether we are doing what is right in the eyes of God.
