And this song certainly does more than "mention" friendship. I would say that the song is mourning an old friendship. One might almost call it an elegy, though it mourns a lost idea, or feeling, rather than the person. And yes, while it is true that we love our friends, it's not the same sort of love that you have for your lover. Love isn't a single, simple feeling, it's a lot more complicated than that. Could you say that you love your family in the exact same way that you love your friends? Or in the same way that you love a lover? Of course not, it's more complicated than that. And that last type is the most complicated of all. It's something that most humans search for, strive for, reach for. And sometimes think we have found it, only to find that those feelings aren't true. That's the "sham and a lie" of the song, the love that wasn't true. To say that ALL of what the speaker and this other person had was a "sham and a lie" seems to me a gross misinterpretation. You're taking the title of the song and ripping it out of context with all the rest of it.
