Does he kiss your eyelids in the morning when you start to raise your head?
And does he sing to you incessantly from the space between your bed and wall?
Does he walk around all day at school with his feet inside your shoes?
Looking down every few steps to pretend he walks with you.
Oh does he know that place below your neck that is your favorite to be touched,
and does he cry through broken sentences that I love you far too much?
Does he lay awake listening to your breath?
Worried you smoke too many cigarettes.
Is he coughing now, on a bathroom floor?
For every speck of tile there's a thousand more,
you won’t ever see.
but you must hold inside yourself eternally.
Well I drug your ghost across the country and we plotted out my death.
In every city, memories would whisper, Here is where you rest.
I was determined in Chicago but I dug my teeth into my knees,
and I settled for a telephone and sang into your machine.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
And I kissed a girl with a broken jaw that her father gave to her.
She had eyes bright enough to burn me. They reminded me of yours.
And In a story told she was a little girl in a red-rouge, sun-bruised field
and there were rows of ripe tomatoes where a secret was concealed.
And it rose like thunder, clapped under our hands.
And it stretched for centuries to a diary entry’s end
where I wrote,
You make me happy
oh when skies are gray.
You make me happy oh when skies are gray, and gray, and gray.
Well the clock’s heart it hangs inside its open chest
with its hands stretched towards the calendar hanging itself
but I will not weep for those dying days.
For all the ones who've left there's a few that stayed.
And they found me here and pulled me from the grass where I was laid.

i really hope no one ever understands this song. it's full of metaphors that aren't meant to be literal, and when you start analyzing it too much, you read something into it that's not there. it's about finding beauty in a corrupt woman who doesn't love him back, and feeling the wrath. that's it.
possible meaning | Reviewer: dah person | 1/5/09
I think the meaning of this song:
his lover died, and he tries to find someone to help him forget,
and when he can't he plans his death, as the song says.
he attempts suicide, and the ones who knew him find him.
Either way the song is incredible

he was betrayed the woman of his dreams, he sings to her and worships her, yet he still gets the voice mail, hes so depressed he leaves planning a retreat,to find someone else to replace her to forget her,but he still wants her, to hear her voice, when he cant he determines his fate without tears and takes his own life, trying to forget their life together
meaning... | Reviewer: Cory | 12/4/08
i think the song is about how this girl hurt him so deeply that he went out and got with as many girls as he could. Then at the end he says "but I will not weep for those dying days.
For all the ones who've left there's a few that stayed" because nothing can change the past, he just wants to forget it all
Awesome | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/3/07
I'm not a huge Bright Eyes fan, but this is an amazing song; far and away the best thing Conor has written that I have heard. There is so much emotion in this song, both lyrically and musically, and he's able to get it out without being overly ridiculous (If Winter Ends, I'm looking in your direction...). One of the best songs of the past decade.

i love the song but im haveing a hard time geting the meaning of this part ?
"she was a little girl in a red-rouge, sun-bruised field
and there were rows of ripe tomatoes where a secret was concealed"
if anyone has any ideas can you enter a comment???? pleace
I think there is a deeper meaning to this song,
to me it sounds almost like someone being obsessive, ie passionate, over someone who is with someone else, only to eventually kill this lover he couldnt have, or using that metaphorically to examine this as a metaphor through the essence of not death in its trueness but a death from something or feeling, the secret which we can only assume to be what was between him and his feelings for this lover that are being concealed only resurface these points.
You are my sunshine | Reviewer: Sof. | 10/11/07
I love this song.
But yeh, I think it is the "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine" from the childrens song as later on it says "You make my happy, oh when skies are grey." Which is also from the song.
Nnyeh, great song though.

The song is spectacular, definately one of thier best. It's intricately written and laced with emotion. Wonderful.
Though I would like to note,
"You are my sunshine" is not an intended children's song.
It was a verse from a very depressing blues song.
Either way, it doesn't compromise the `oomf` that it gives this song.
simply amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/23/07
words can not express the meaning of all the life or love holds but the words are about as closer then any i've heard so far.
I wounder if we all spoke such lovely words
just what would are world hold. . .
