It's a beautiful song about a wolf who is close to dying. He sees the future of wolves is not certain "last amazing grays" and he hopes the young ones can lead the pack. He remembers those who have died before him, and before he passes he sees them in his mind. He remembers his life and joins the dead, forever to guard the pack from the "amazing grays" which is the sky/heavens.
