This song may also be about a soldier in Vietnam who is left behind "I'll be here, fighting forever" or who left a friend and/or fellow soldier behind and wishes that it could have been them, not the fellow soldier, who was left behind on the battlefield, "Nevermind, turn back time, you'll be fine, / I will get left behind"
However, it may be years after the Vietnam War, when they are simply dealing with the trauma of the war in the form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as illustrated by the lines:
Borderline, dead inside,
I don't mind, falling to pieces
Count me in, violent, let's begin,
Feeding the sickness

And either way, this soldier is having trouble killing his enemies How do I, simplify, dislocate,
the enemies on the way

With dislocate here meaning to disassociate the enemy with actual people and so be able to kill them without feeling as though he was murdering innocent people, possibly in the My Lai Massacre, which was an incident where US troops killed over five hundred innocent Vietnamese civilians. (The military covered up it and took no action on until the massacre was discovered and the military pressured to do punish the soldiers by the American public almost a year later).

This main chorus seems to show the heart of this soldier's problems:
Show me what it's like,
to dream in black and white,
so I can leave this world tonight.

The soldier wants to lose his moral perspective "seeing in shades of grey" so he can release the guilt of his killings in the heat of war.

I was feeling really down and when Iheard this song, I really liked it!! I didn't think that I had a point in living anymore but after I heard this song, well somehow, my life just sorta turned around and I feel like helping others in need like I did. I guess this song saved my life.

I love their songs so much.. lyrics are so amazingly epic!! I would have to say my favorite song by them is Into the Nothing, because it is so.. There are no words to describe, just listen and you will know what i mean! for all those who say that your favorite songs are diary of jane and breathe, you need to live a little and listen to the rest of their songs! go Breaking Benjamin!

The chorus is my fav part, just because he can sing it with such an emotion, it is amazing. that is why this is my favorite BB song, just because of the chorus, they do have manyyy other songs i like too, and are really good! =D

This song is pretty good, but not their best. Breathe is of course better, and Diary of Jane is better than that. Blow Me Away is one of the best...if ya haven't heard it..you should. The thing is, people often mistake the song name "Blow Me Away" for something like "Only the Strongest Will Survive."

This song is awesome of course it is tho -.- its by Breaking Benjamin! But for all you people who haven't listened to any song by BB except breath and Diary of Jane go actually experience the band instead of saying their best songs are breath and D.o.J. cuz they have songs 100x better

This song is one of the songs that really got me into Breaking Benjamin. My friend Chris was showing me various Breaking Benjamin songs when Unknown Soldier came up. Being interested in military based stuff I was interested. Although this isn't a military themed song I still like it. This is one of the greatest songs ever.
