Wallflowers Lyrics

"I kind of stumbled upon writing a record this time," says
Wallflowers singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jakob Dylan,
explaining the origins of Red Letters Days. For the dual
Grammy Award-winning band, their fourth album gradually
took shape last year in the midst of an extensive tour
schedule in support of 2000's Breach.
"I kind of needed a distraction from the road so I
naturally started writing," says Dylan, 32. "I really took
advantage of the schedule and by the time I looked down
there were a bunch songs. I just woke up one day More...

------ About the song Nearly Beloved performed by Wallflowers

Jakob Dylan is perhaps the most underrated major musical talent. This song is a perfect showcase of his skills, ith its driving beat, catchy melody, outstanding production and fabulous lyrics. What other rock artist can you think of that references Orpheus in a song?

------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

Jakob Dylan: "I tend to write with a lot of metaphors and images, so people take them literally. The song's meaning is all in the first verse. It's about the death of ideas. The first verse says, 'The death of the long broken arm of human law.' At times, it seems like there should be a code among human beings that is about respect and appreciation. I wasn't feeling like there was much support outside the group putting together the record. In the chorus, it says, 'C'mon try a little.' I didn't need everything to get through, I could still get through -- meaning 'one headlight."

------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

This song is about a man (specifically) trying to break through the fog of depression. He's still in the denial stage after such a long time. His friends are concerned that he has changed so much since she killed herself. They are concerned that he is sinking into a shell and only wanting to remenisce about the good old days with her instead of getting on with real life. He feels cold on the fourth of July, feels like an old truck that won't start, someone else has to tell him how long she has been dead and he stood in the distance at her funeral or at least felt like it. He wants to get out of this funk, which doesn't have to be the actual place. Can just be the way the depression makes you feel about a place. She jumps out a window and now he might do the same.

------ About the song From The Bottom Of My Heart performed by Wallflowers

This song is about being bound to a coma, comatose, and wanting to know the truth about it:

"From the bottom of my heart
Comes a cold dark feeling
There is eminent death
to the promise I'm keeping"

It is really one of the most outstanding lyrics in the entire album.

------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

the first is obvious liveing in the past can't move mostly because not really tring "come on try a little nothing is forever" somthing speical is now over and he is not moving on he is reconizie it because he doesn't want to even though he should "got to be somthing better then in the middle" meaning in the middle of the past and what is the future

also you be in a state of living to survive verse live to live " got the be somehtihng better than in the middle" when you life to survive usual you feel dead inside there for you are in the middle of life an death your choice way to go

depression also "She said it's cold
It feels like Independence Day
And I can't break away from this parade
But there's got to be an opening
Somewhere here in front of me
Through this maze of ugliness and greed" she wanted out so way and could not find

now and this a rescent intruptaion of mind icould me something such work or a relationship I will use relationship because easier for me to relate to. the relation has changed in some sort of way maybe a freindship that leads to flrting eventualy but one of the people steal sees as a friendship and the other start falling "Hey, come on try a little
Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
In the middle
But me & Cinderella,
We put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight"
sort of like try either try to stop or try to make is work take a chance on us or let is go "So long ago, I don't remember when
That's when they say I lost my only friend
....nothing last forever" "there's got to be someting better than in the middle" this in between state can't be the best there is "me and cindela we put it all together we can drive it home with one head light" basicaly thought could be we put our lives together we can make as one.

now over all the song is about some one who needs to move on but doesn't want to for fear of loseing the memories of the past but it is still killing him slowly and he knows "Well this place is old
It feels just like a beat up truck
I turn the engine, but the engine doesn't turn
Well it smells of cheap wine & cigarettes
This place is always such a mess
Sometimes I think I'd like to watch it burn
I'm so alone, and I feel just like somebody else
Man, I ain't changed, but I know I ain't the same
But somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
I think her death it must be killin' me"

but like most art it can be intuprtes in diferent ways to fit different moods

existentialism | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

You guys do realize this song was written during the great existentialism period of the 90's. The whole song is in metaphor. It's mostly about living for the sake of living... but looking for some deeper meaning beyond what "is".

So long ago I don't remember when, that's when they said I lost my only friend. they said she died easy of a broken heart disease
As I listened through the cemetery trees" Something has change, beliefs, the innocence that you're conformable with all your life.

"She ran until she out of breathe she ran until there's nothing.. she hit the end and it's just your window ledge." You try and try but in the end, it's the same... "I can't break away from this parade" and "i turn the engine, but the engine doesn't turn"

"come on try a little, nothing is forever.. there's got to be something better than in the the middle". The middle being the state of existing without passion or goal. But "we can make it, we can drive it home on one head light"... being, we can get out of this and find a purpose together, even with our disadvantages (one instead of both headlights)

Suicide | Reviewer: CC
------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

He is singing about his girlfriend who committed suicide. He hadnt noticed her unhappiness. She had appeared to be strong as she stood by his side and could manage anything. He now recalls events/moments or hints that would reveal she was depressed. Even visits the places she hung around before committing the act. She quietly asked for his help and he failed to notice. She felt alone and saw no escape. He finds it hard to move forward in life and regrets not being there for his only true friend.

The song is about an relationship in early stages..They are about to consumate...and she freaked out & decides the dude is NOT THE ONE...He is still willing, bet she abruptly KILS the "special" moment...thus leaving one headlight still burning brightly, the other is burned out...the only thing that dies is the real chance to take the relationship to the next level...in oother words...the chick was an EMO and dumps him at the most opportune time..and he mourns over the things..telling us he still loves her....Duh

The song is about regrets and a love left him | Reviewer: Q
------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

Personally, I believe this song is about regrets and lost love. The guy is regretting that he didn't treat the love of his love well and she left. Her death is her giving up on him and the relationship - she gave it her all (ran until she's out of breath) and finally gave up and left (she hits the end). Her funeral is symbolic of him mourning his loss of her love.

He's asking her to "put it all together, drive it home" and try to make it work with him despite how damaged the relationship is at that point (hence the one headlight analogy).
