Review about What I've Done Wow | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/6/09
Personally, I doubt that this song has anything to do with religon. This is what the meaning that I get from linkin park:
"In this farewell
There's no blood
There's no alibi
Cause I've drawn regret
From the truth
Of a thousand lies"
What I feel like Chester is saying that he is done with lying to get ahead and causing pain for others. The character [I will refrence him as Chester] is done with lying all the time, done with seeing people suffer when he lies but makes others happy. This is where he decides to right his wrongs.
"So let mercy come
And wash away"
This is like wishing himself good luck for apologizing to whoever and making things right again.
"What I've done
I'll face myself
To cross out what I've become
Erase myself
And let go of what I've done"
I feel that this is saying what the first verse is saying. What Ive done is refering to all the wrongs he did. Face myself, face all of his actions and get rid of his new gilded self. Letting go is simply, letting go of all the pain and misery.
"Put to rest
What you thought of me
While I clean this slate
With the hands
Of uncertainty"
What you thought of me. He is refering to whoever he wasnt being himself infront of just to impress them or satisfy them. This caused lies and deception among ones he left behind, and he realized the pains. How he does it, he doesnt know, but he knows its going to hurt.
"I'll start again
And whatever pain may come
Today this ends
I'm forgiving what I've done"
Starting again is starting again with his relationship with others. He is done with all the lies, the hypocracy, the deception, everything.
So hopefuly you see that this isnt a song about God. Yeah Im a believer, but I dont feel like flaming others bashing religon right now. As far as linkin park goes, *cough* this was an expiremental album. If you purchased and read it, the producer suggested that they tried something new for this album. Well, thats what we got. This is their softer album, and from what Im hearing from their new album, there is going to be a mixture of songs that are similar to meteora and hybrid theory's songs, and songs like "What Ive Done", "Bleed it out", "No More Sorrow", "Given Up", and hopefully more guitar solos as heard from "In Pieces". Their next album should be impressive if what I am saying is true, which probaly is. Wheres the kid who said conformist?

@ Jesusfreak:
oh, you're so right!
If you don't give Love, you'll get love, thats what jesus said or what have been in the very heart of his talkings.
And he said that a long time before Kant said:
"Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law." More text, same meaning ;D
But this song isn't about god or jesus.
Its just about all bad things in the world.
Nothing with religion.
But: Everything that is in the bible (or better in the New Testament) is a guide "how to live right". so think i. you shouldn't take everything by the word, but read between the sentences.
then you see that its just a book about a guy, who knows the right way of living.
P.S.: Jesus was just a normal man.
And god made mistakes, too.
but learned and want you to learn.

I'm a Christian, and to all you people who are saying this song isn't about God and His love, that's your opinion.
I think this song is about how we should turn to Jesus, God's Son, before the day of judgment, because then it will be too late. (I'm simply stating a fact here.) If you let Jesus into your heart, your life will change completely. I'm not saying that you won't have anything bad happen to you even again, just that...it's hard to describe how your life changes.
Jesus is Lord.
Linkin Park rocks.
Jesus uses even ordinary people like me to convey His word.
Jesus is Lord.

I think the song is what you make it. It has a different meaning to each person who has listned to it. To some it may be about letting go of the past and starting a new. For some people who believe in god, to them it may be about gods forgivness and love. And to others it just may be a cool song to listen to. To me I view it as him saying he's letting go of the past, starting a clean slate and not holding on to his past demons any longer. For example in the line
"To cross out what I've become
Erase myself
And let go of what I've done
Put to rest
What you thought of me
While I clean this slate
With the hands
Of uncertainty"
It almost as if he is saying, I dont know what the future holds, its uncertain, but Im letting go, Im forgiving myself, Im moving on, for me. Cause we all have those things we've done, those past, or maybe even present hurts that we hold onto and carry along with us. And at one point in order to truly move on in life, we must let these hurts go, for ourselves. Cause I dont think god intended for us to carry around all that baggage. He intended for us to be free. But this is just my view on it. ( and no I'm not saying this is a relgious song, I'm saying this is what it means to me, and Im not trying to "force" my beliefs on anyone, not every christian is like this, Im simply staying my view. Anywho all in all I think its a really great song either way. So yeah thats my take it on it. That is allll yo=].
The truth | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/16/09
Amazing song! Incredibly evocative & powerful. i've read some of the responses by Christians here & as a Christian, have mixed feelings about them...
First, i think it's unfair to hijack (for want of a better word) this song. i could be wrong but nowhere have LP expressed explicit beliefs in God or Christianity. Having seen the official video, i think LP want the song to refer to humanity ("the truth of a thousand lives") and it's many mistakes, graphically illustrated in their video - poverty, dictatorships, child soldiers, global-warming, starvation, pollution, drug abuse, materialism, antisemitism, racism, terrorism, violence, war etc.
Certainly the song uses a lot of Christian terminology e.g. "cross out what i've become," "let mercy come" could refer to Jesus' death on the Cross erasing our sin and guilt & "wash away" (old hymn called what can wash away my sin? nothing but the blood of Jesus). There's also this idea of new life running through the song, saying farewell to the past & embracing a new life of forgiveness. Again, all very Christian.
But then the opening line says "there's no blood no alibi" which seems to suggest they're not thinking of Jesus' death, by which He became our advocate or alibi by shedding His blood. Also several shots of various religions appear around the line "while i clean this slate with the hands of uncertainty" on the video which seems to suggest that LP DON'T think religion provides certain forgiveness/change.
It seems to me the song's true meaning is about learning from others' mistakes and our own, facing up to the mess we are, then we come to the end of ourselves ("today this ends") to a place where we forgive ourselves and "start again."

Well ill probably get hate responds and GO AWAY comments back but oh well. If this song is or is'nt about God does not really matter i mean we don't even know. But what i do know is that you guys are all talking about religion, and frankly i don't like religion its a stereo-type name they put on an actual good way of living your life. Christianity isnt a religion, ok yes it is but its not about going to a church or anything its about a relationship with a Creator, a God who made you in his image. My life has changed so much with God's Love it's amazing i used to listen to Likin Park all the time im not saying its bad i like this Band but really i was really down when i would hear it and i just can't believe God changed me, he can change you too if you let him. Well nice writing to anyone who will read this whole thing.
God Bless you today and Always <3
first off, the losers that say every song ever is about god need a swift kick,,, and secondly this song sucks. people say metallica sold out but what about linkin park? where is the linkin park i loved from hybrid theory? they changed their music hoping to get some more fans, and it worked. good for them, but true music lovers will recognize them as being total sellouts.without the nu metal sound theyre just another boring conformist band... too bad they really had potential

Ok seriously? Religion is just for weak minded poeple that need something to help them live. Come on! all the facts are against you, if you had a hint of common sense you would know that none of it is scientificily proven or possible. Dont get me wrong this song is amazing, but to say that it was some guy writing about god? how about evolving a little bit. Religion is something for people so they know they can be positive because "he" is always watching. This is a great song. dont ruin it.

While I respect the whole freedom of belief thing, I have to disagree with you Nottelling. I have read the Bible. Heck I even went to a christian school from 1-9 grade. And I can honestly say that I was brainwashed by the church and by my parents.
It's ok if that's what you belive but Y\you shouldn't try to force your religion on people. And the mercy part is your interpretation on the song. To say that it means that is your own interpretation of the song.
Now for the review: I liked this song.

i get the whole freedom of belief thing, and hey i respect every religion out there from Catholicism to Islam to Scientology , just don't make comments about how every one should " follow God. hes the only one that can save us" we dont need people telling us what to believe, how we should believe it, and accept it blindly, and yea yu were right i realy do need sum sense knocked into me, but hey im not the only one :)
