What shall we do now Lyrics - Pink Floyd

Review The Song (4)

What shall we use to fill the empty spaces
Where waves of hunger roar
Shall we set out across this sea of faces
In search of more and more applause

Shall we buy a new guitar
Shall we drive a more powerful car
Shall we work straight through the night
Shall we get into fights
Leave the lights on
Drop bombs
Do tours of the East
Contract diseases
Bury bones
Break up homes
Send flowers by phone
Take to drink
Go to shrinks
Give up meat
Rarely sleep
Keep people as pets
Train dogs
Race rats
Fill the attic with cash
Bury treasure
Store up leisure
But never relax at all
With our backs to the wall

Well, what is great about Floyd is that all of their songs take on multiple meanings and parallel many things wthin society. Although I am sure this song (and the whole album) was intended to have overlapped and paralleled many life experiences / social issues, it was mainly just Waters writing songs about his past tours which for the most part were unfulfilling to him regardless of the amount of money made, women slept with, or fans earned. I think the lyrics "drop bombs, do tours of the east" were the lines that created the most obvious parallel to outer social issues, but as stated by Waters himself- the whole album is about his life experiences touring and the lack of fulfillment from that lifestyle. For all we know "drop bombs" was a euphemism for "dropping loads". Just another Floyd mystery yet to be solved. You're welcome.

secret message live | Reviewer: ed | 7/30/10

this song live was amazing and was the secret message in the place of the empty space where they could not talk. the message details the trends that america goes through when we go to war. factories get busy (work straight through the night), rock music gets intense(buy new guitar), muscle cars get popular(drive more powerful car) _ then it details the effects of war on the post war veteran - go to shrinks, give up meat, rarely sleep - although it seems that the song asks what Pink Floyd will do now - it actually is addressed to what war will our country get in
P.S. "keep people as pets" is answered in the Wall movie when the name of the British officers dog is the N word - so which society puts down the black population, make them live in ghettos "raise rats" - USA

Amazing | Reviewer: Innerwolf | 2/16/09

Everything about this song is amazing. The lyrics reflect so much onto our society (as a civilized country), how each no-one is really free, and we just live and die..
Even the video says so much about this song, using a spreading wall to show how we, as humans, grow and take over the natural world around us.
"Shall we buy a new guitar
Shall we drive a more powerful car
Shall we work straight through the night
Shall we get into fights"
That verse just shows that all we do is collect money, to buy new things that we never need, and end up into more trouble.

An amazing song, amazing video, amazing band.

Our backs to the Wall | Reviewer: alex | 8/16/08

i love how The Wall is quintessential arena rock, as far away from the avant garde rock of Floyd's origins as they'd probably get
but is still as sharp as pop music comes

I dont think ive seen many mainstream acts that so ruthlessly indicts its own audience as here
with a bunch of gazillionares showing us how empty their lauded lifestyle sometimes can be, comparing their legions of fans to mindless bootstepping facists
Im glad they made the connection clear to all us numbskulls (though sometimes i wonder hearing how many love this album)

Seems like Floyd helped usher in the hopeful hippe era & its music of choice & stayed around just long enough to see the whole thing fail miserably

bitter bitter bitter
