White Houses Lyrics
Artist(Band):Vanessa Carlton
Crashed on the floor when I moved in
This little bungalow with some strange new friends
Stay up too late, and I'm too thin
We promise each other it's 'til the end
Now we're spinning empty bottles
It's the five of us
With pretty eyed boys girls die to trust
I can't resist the day
No, I can't resist the day
Jenny screams out and it's no pose
'Cause when she dances she goes and goes
Beer through the nose on an inside joke
And I'm so excited, I haven't spoken
And she's so pretty, and she's so sure
Maybe I'm more clever than a girl like her
Summer's all in bloom
Summer is ending soon
It's alright and it's nice not to be so alone
But I hold on to your secrets in white houses
Maybe I'm a little bit over my head
I come undone at the things he said
And he's so funny in his bright red shirt
We were all in love and we all got hurt
I sneak into his car's cracked leather seat
The smell of gasoline in the summer heat
Boy, we're going way too fast
It's all too sweet to last
It's alright
And I put myself in his hands
But I hold on to your secrets in white houses
Love, or something ignites in my veins
And I pray it never fades in white houses
My first time, hard to explain
Rush of blood, oh, and a little bit of pain
On a cloudy day, it's more common than you think
He's my first mistake
Maybe you were all faster than me
We gave each other up so easily
These silly little wounds will never mend
I feel so far from where I've been
So I go, and I will not be back here again
I'm gone as the day is fading on white houses
I lied, wrote my injuries all in the dust
In my heart is the five of us
In white houses
And you, maybe you'll remember me
What I gave is yours to keep
In white houses <i>[x3]

Review about White Houses
What it's about... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/28/2008This song isn't about college. It's about a summer intensive dance program that she went to. That is a really intense camp for aspiring dancers. They usually last most of the summer.
So the song describes how she got wrapped up with a guy and ended up having her first time there. I think more people than anyone realizes can relate to this song... I love it by the way!!!!
awesome | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/20/2008
I thought this song was about her experience at the dance school she went to before she started her music career. Apparently white houses are referring to the dorms which she shared with her college friends at the dance school. It sounds very like a University experience to me lol. I love this song, it really touches me, its the innocence of her teenage years growing up and experiencing things for the first time yet keeping it private in her own little way. Brilliant.
Amazing! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/7/2008
I absolutely love this song. The lyrics are amazing as well as her piano playing skills, she is just all together an amazing artist. This is definately a song I can listen to over and over without it getting old. And the fact that I can relate to it makes it even better. I LOVE IT!

This song isn't about her five friends living in a white house with great memories.
It's about something she regrets. Something that she wants to forget.
It's an incredible song.
So many girls can relate to it.
And thats something that we really need.
Vanessa is amazingg.
I love her.

This is one of my favorite songs from Nessa- also I love Who's to Say and Annie as well as San Francisio. There's a bit of insecurity in White Houses but also confidence + realization as well. There's a sense of closeness too, and how that effects her. I just love her lyrical syle- its great.
2nd time like the song even more | Reviewer: Alegra | 11/19/2007
When I first heard white houses I was to young to understand the real meaning of her song. I just loved her voice, and the melody. I came upon her again and fell in love with the song. Her lyrics and voice are amazing. At my age this is a song i can really relate to. Vanessa lyrics are written with true heart. I love that many things in this song seam to be kept secret so when she is singing them she knows what she means but maybe not the listener.
Could I fit it all in this little box? | Reviewer: TamaraS. | 11/13/2007
Vanessa Carlton... what can I say about her that all you other Nessa-lovers haven't said? She's amazing, she can sing with her delicate voice, she's plays the piano while she's doing it and is a great dancer. I learned about her one day when I heard "1000 miles" on the radio, fell in love with her ever since. Guys, if you really want some great music from her,
-buy her CDs, it supports her economically and mentally, letting her make better songs and more of them
-don't just listen to her singles, the songs by her that aren't singles are the real treat. Real music.
White houses is a pretty song, I first heard it when I was really young, never got the meaning...but now I really understand it and I can tell that she poured her heart and soul into this song. Now I'm dying to know what experience she pulled it from.
-TS
P.S.Try "Paradise" by Nessa too if you're interested.

I really like this song- not because she's talking about how losing her virginity was a mistake, but because the feeling in how she sings and sends the message without putting it so straight forward. Most of the parts in this song no one get- but I like it because she's keeping it her own little inside thoughts. It's really cool. Love ya Vanessa!
